Per TC AIM-AIR (Middle Ear and Sinus Discomfort or Pain), pressure can be equalized by swallowing, yawning or opening the mouth, and by the Valsalva manoeuvre (gently blowing against a pinched nose) — so all of the listed methods help clear the ears on descent.
